Baxter Heparin Recall due to Severe Allergic Reactions and Deaths
Baxter Recalls Heparin (Multi Dose Vials)
According to a new medical report, the active ingredient in Heparin may be linked to dangerous allergic reactions that could lead to nausea, difficulty breathing and rapidly falling blood pressure that can lead to death. An important ingredient that Baxter International Inc. uses to make its blood thinner Heparin may be linked to potentially life-threatening allergic reactions according to Baxter. Although Baxter's Heparin is manufactured at a plant in Cherry Hill, N.J. Baxter uses a U.S. based-supplier that makes the "active pharmaceutical ingredient" in plants in China. Baxter states they have used this supplier for over 20 years.
Heparin Severe Allergic Reactions - Falling Blood Pressure can be Fatal
The FDA said potentially dangerous and "life-threatening" allergic reactions have been linked to Baxter's multi-dose vials of Heparin blood thinner. So far, the reactions are believed to be limited to "initial loading" dosages before undergoing in-center dialysis treatment or heart surgery. They have included nausea, difficulty breathing and rapidly falling blood pressure that can lead to death. Problems have not been reported with continuous use of the product. The FDA reports that four people have died after having immediate allergic reactions to Heparin, but the FDA said these cases did not "follow the pattern" of patients experiencing reactions from initial high dosages, known as "bolus" doses.
